Attending: N.
Brady, J. Brummond, C. Campbell, D. D’Haem, P. Nolan, P. Paquette, B. Parks,
G. Weixler, R. Weixler, J. Winslow, Joan Winslow.
The meeting was called to order by President Brummond at
7:00PM. The minutes were approved
as presented.
Correspondence:
The several items
were routed, but did not require any action.
Treasurer’s report:
The Salmon Bake was a modest financial success. While the event was the
usual great success (Thank you Helen!!), there was consensus that next year we
need to raise the fees to insure that it is a financial success for the Library
as well. A basis meal fee of $10
was suggested.
The annual furnace
maintenance has been completed. In
July Carol bought the special replacement florescent tubes which will be stored
in the Ladies room overhead. In
general the YTD expenses versus budget are in good control, and this is
primarily due to the great success of our recent special book sales!
Branch Manager’s report: Here is Dee’s report pretty much intact:
New wingback chairs in reading room… & yes they recline! This is part of the “reading room chairs” project by KRL. Look for more changes before the end of the year.
Computer area project: should be getting study carrels soon. We have the printer stand & storage unit.
Children’s Programming:
ü Summer reading going very well. No numbers yet.
ü Marble give-away ! WOW lots of entries.
ü Terrific Tuesday’s Good response! A couple dozen kids each week with 11
finishers the first week and 14 the second week. The first prize winner was a very excited Isaac Kasuske. He won a large container of candy! This week there were 4 winners ~ the kids got to choose what prize to compete for. (A chess set & yoyo, bad mitten set, squirt gun, a large plastic puzzle & soccer ball, checkers. All these purchases from the dollar store or donated. On the 3rd week we will giving away candy again.
**This attendance adds a lot to our circulation statistics & patron counter.
Young Adult program: This program paid for by Friends. This was a
fantastic program by Janine Donoho. Three DJ’s from Seattle. Poorly attended (5). BUT>>>>> Sylvan Way branch had the same program and had only 6 kids and they had to search the library for teens and invite them to attend. Reason for this lack of response? PR person says not enough PR. Next YA program is in August & we’ll see what happens to justify any more $ spent on teen programs.
Actions resulting from Dee’s report; Dee will investigate whether the KRL maintenance staff can move the
magazine rack to the South wall in the reading area.
The other option is to use volunteer labor.
Bookstore report: The price increases implemented this past month have been accepted
favorably. The rearrangement of the
bookshelves was most successful, but it is apparent that we will need to add
some additional lighting at both ends of the aisles. (see action item in new business).
Old Business: The Salmon Bake was a success as noted in the Treasurer’s report,
although fewer meals were served this year; the consensus was the hot weather
was to blame (aren’t we ones to whine about hot weather!)
The music was judged to add a nice atmosphere to the event and the MCA
children’s activities were also successful.
Julie offered to assemble a small group to review “lessons learned”
on the salmon bake to make next year’s event even more successful.
It was mentioned that assembly of the canopies was a challenge this year
due to components getting mixed in the two different types of canopy boxes
during the last teardown. Peggy
Nolan volunteered to find some more rugged plastic storage containers for the
canopies and we need to better label the components to avoid mixing.
Julie made extra copies of the assembly instruction.
Once new containers are procured, someone needs to go through the parts
and color code them and add instruction sheets.
It was determined that
if the Library has an interest in the building it occupies, then the Washington
Entity Pool Insurance could pick up the policy for a cost reduction.
Carol has written a letter to the State to pursue this, but it will need
to go through a lengthy review. Carol
is on top of this.
The card and gift certificate were sent to Don Poulson in thanks for his
efforts in creating the trunk for our raffle.
Apparently Don wants to do some fine-tuning on the trunk prior to the
8/28 raffle. Rich will contact Don to arrange a convenient time.
John Winslow reported that he has forwarded the final information for the
Friends section on the MCA web-site to Anne Cisney.
Look for our new addition at the site www.manchesterca.org!
Carol clarified that it is okay to request plant donations for the May
plant sale section of the site, so John
will add that section back into the text.
The Long Lake Garden Club fulfilled their obligation to maintain the
south slope gardens just prior to the Salmon Bake.
The Trunk raffle continues to gather contributions.
Julie asked for volunteers to staff a table at the weekly Farmers’
Market. We will take both the trunk
and quilt and sell raffle tickets when we have volunteers available for the
Market. Carol suggested that we add
a photo of the quilt to the MCA web-site to augment our publicity.
Carol to forward quilt photos to
John who will forward to Anne Cisney. There
will be a raffle booth at the 8/28 festival.
We are still seeking volunteers to fill our vacant Vice President
position.
New Business:
Bob investigated the
cost of an annual furnace maintenance contract.
The proposal is under consideration.
The Weixlers need
help maintaining the bookstore during their absence.
Norma and Carol volunteered to do
the work, Dee will contact them when help is needed.
The need for additional lighting in the bookstore was
acknowledged and Bob got two bids on performing the work along with adding an
outside electrical outlet on the south end of the building. The proposal from Ahearn Electric was accepted with the
provision that the quote be clarified on the outlet being rated at 20 amps.
Carol will get the contract signed
with clarification on 20A rating.
The gardens need an improved watering system.
A buried soaker hose was suggested.
Julie & Bob offered to donate
hoses, and Carol was given approval to buy whatever additional hosing materials
are required. A work party is planned for 8/2, Julie will coordinate.
Carol also mentioned that the outside water faucet has a very low flow.
Bob will attempt to get a
volunteer from the Water District to take corrective action.
Carol procured a durable 4’ stepladder to avoid
accidents resulting from the use of unapproved height enhancing equipment by
vertically challenged volunteers. It
was approved that Carol be reimbursed.
Carol has investigated the cost of covering the display board and
bookcase back panel with cork board self adhesive tiles.
It was approved that Carol be
authorized to purchase the cork for both applications.
Gigi had purchased some transparent magazine boxes for the bookstore.
The reimbursement was approved.
Bob was requested to investigate the cost of adding air conditioning to
the building. He had a quote from
Quality Heating using a Colman A/C unit and they would be able to begin work
next week. There were several questions about the specifics on the quote that
needed clarification, which Bob was going to pursue.
If those matters were clarified favorably, it
was agreed to handle the approval via e-mail.
In a related matter, the possibility of adding powered attic vents to
reduce the cooling load was suggested; this
should be considered at the next meeting.
Phil requested the approval for the MCA to use
Library electricity and approximately five of the canopies for the 8/28
festival. This was approved.
Next meeting: The next meeting will be held on Wednesday August 25th.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45PM.
Respectfully submitted,
John Winslow, Secretary
