Treasurer’s report:
Treasurer Campbell provided a report covering the past two month’s
activities. The Salmon Bake and
other activities that day resulted in a good addition to the coffers, and was a
50% gain over last year. Carol also
mentioned that the insurance has now been paid through 9/1/05; at that point a
full year’s premium will be due.
Carol also suggested that we take a closer look at
projecting future capital expenses to help forecast how intensely we need to
work on our fundraising. We agreed
that we need to set aside a day in late
October or early November for strategic planning purposes.
Branch Manager’s report:

Reading Program:
This year it is going very well. We are ahead of all past years with over
240 kids signed up and over 100 finishers (kids who have read 10 hours
or more). We had almost 150 people at the 1st paid performer program
and 200 at the 2nd.
Teen
Movie Night/Tattoos:
This was a rousing success with 44 kids and 3 adults!!!! attending.
The kids had a blast! They socialized, ate, watched a movie and got
tattoos (and no parents complained)!

Books2Go
- During the 50th Anniversary celebration next week (begins August 2nd)
KRL will be introducing a new library service, Books 2 Go. Books 2 Go is a
collection of trade paperbacks that will be featured near the front door at each
branch. The Books 2 Go collection can be checked out like a regular book,
however no renewals or holds are allowed - they are all additional copies of
titles that we already have at KRL. The books are for what we call serendipitous
browsers. Books 2 Go should particularly appeal to commuters and people heading
out on vacation, who are in a hurry and only have the time to look at a small
collection.

Facilities:
New
floors ~ people are noticing and
remarking about the improvement.
Take
down coat rack-
The rack is seldom used and we could use the wall space for display and
for the new dry erase board. Bob
to remove and this was sold to Ron Rada for $5.
Memorial
Gift – The family of Doreen Wright
George has asked that any donations in her memory be made to the Friends of the
Manchester Library and spent on children.
NOTE:
The KRL board meeting is scheduled to be held at the Manchester Library
on Thursday, August 25 at 6:00 pm.
Bookstore report: Gigi reports that sales continue at a great pace.
Our next special book sale will be held in November.
We are looking for additional book storage boxes similar to the sturdy
pink boxes currently in use (they fit perfectly!).
There was a significant donation of used books by Marty Yahn; John
will send a thank you note.
Facilities report:
Bob reported that the annual furnace maintenance has been completed and the
filters all located. The entryway
door has a crack in the glass which Bob
will arrange to have repaired. The
back hillside grass cutting was discussed; Carol
will attempt to find a service which will trim the grass.
Bob requested a location for mounting a 30” square holder for posting
Port minutes in a secure display. After
some discussion, several alternatives were agreed to be pursued with the Library
staff supporting/monitoring access to the minutes.
Old Business:
It was agreed that the
Long Lake Garden Club was not providing a satisfactory level of maintenance on
the Library gardens. Julie agreed
to write a letter to the LLGC president expressing our concerns and requesting
action.
Julie is still pursuing ideas for improving the
appearance of the Library entry. Library
staff supports the plan to relocate the garbage/recycling containers to the
North side of the Library. Carol
will also investigate the cost of introducing recycling bins/service.
Dee and Carol are to purchase a
laminator for the bookmark project and other uses.
We discussed several options on skylight coverings in the meeting room.
Funding was approved for materials
and labor to cover the skylights with a cellular covering and blinds for the
windows in the used book area.
Joe has been investigating physical barriers to replace the rotten logs
at the top of the south hillside. It
was approved to recommend to the Port
that we have 10-15 “3 man” rocks installed and we will then later pursue
trees/vegetation to “soften” the look of the rocks.
Helen was unavailable to present her notebook on Salmon Bake planning
issues.
New Business:
The MCA festival will
be held on Saturday August 13 and the FOL has agreed to sponsor three booths for
Library related activities.
John mentioned
that the MCC will hold a “Manchester Clean-up day on Saturday October 8th
9:00AM – 2:00PM and requested volunteers to staff a used book drop.
Carol agreed to do this.
Next meeting: The next regular meeting will be Wednesday August 24th at
7:00PM. Also note that we are
invited to attend the KRL Board meeting on the following day, Thursday August 25th,
at 6:00PM in the Library as well.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:55PM.
Respectfully submitted,
John Winslow, Secretary
