The meeting was called to order by President Brummond at 6:58PM.  Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as written.

Correspondence: The correspondence included a note from Robin Cameron, KRL Director of Publicity Services,   The note was seeking our ideas for means to celebrate KRL’s 50th anniversary on August 1.  It also suggested that we may want to include some Branch historical display as well.  Dee suggested that we consider having Manchester branch children prepare art work that could be included in bookmarks that we would reproduce on a limited basis.  Dee will pursue the bookmarks and artwork.  Jan offered to investigate reproduction and laminating costs possibly at Kinkos.

Treasurer’s report: Due to Carol’s absence, Julie presented the preliminary results of the Salmon Bake.  The event was once again fairly profitable for the Library but the expenses still exceed the profit.  The book sale was also helpful, but significantly less than usual special book sales.  A regular monthly financial statement was not available due to Carol’s absence.

Branch Manager’s report:

Programming:

Teen Coffee House – Was on Friday, June 10th 5:30-8:30PM.  Coordinated by Volunteer Nancy Gill & Kirstin from KRL’s Young Adult Dept.  With just 10 days notice the event attracted 12 young adults and 6 adults. (Principal of Discovery school, 2 teachers and 3 other adults).  FOL supported through coffee and tablecloths. Evaluating to see if it warrants repeating.

Kitsap Reads – Presents Susan Loomis on Monday, July 25th 6:30 p.m. at the Farm Kitchen {24309 Port Gamble Rd, Poulsbo}. French & Italian cookbook author. These are free events sponsored by KRL, KRL Foundation, The Sun & the West Sound Independent Bookseller.

Summer Reading ~ Partnering with the KCP&R [and the County Fair] to add to the benefits of reading.  Participants earn a book and a free ticket to the Kitsap County Fair in August. ($5.00 value).  Four paid performers and three in-house programs (designed by Leigh Ann).  Programs begin July 5th and runs through August ??

Teen Movie (K)night & a program giving a short history of tattooing and giving free henna temporary tattoos.  We have already had kids sign up.

NEW electronic resource:

Ancestry.com. Any and all genealogists will be very glad. Library use only (licensing agreement) or WiFi connection w/no time limit.

KRL’s Birthday:

An Idea !  Alice Watson suggested the kids make a bookmark and we have it reproduced and laminated. Theme: The Library’s Birthday!  Put information on the back of the bookmark about KRL and the Manchester Library. Make 6 or 12 of each. Put the first name of the child and age on the bottom.

Volunteer offer:

Mary Katherine Edwards – Offer to play free for a library event. {String Quartet.}  We thought this might be a nice activity to tie to a September 25th anniversary event.  Jan Richards will pursue.

Facilities:

I have requested that KRL pay for a ceiling mounted projection screen and a wall-mounted whiteboard.  I learned earlier today that these purchases were authorized.

I also asked KRL to pay for skylight & window blinds. KRL will not pay for blinds for the skylights or the windows, saying that since these items were attached to the wall they were FOL purchases.  Dee will investigate the cost of adding blinds to the skylights and windows in the meeting/booksale room.

Penny Jar report: There was no report this month.

Bookstore report: Gigi briefly reported on the success of the booksale during the Salmon Bake.  Also, there will likely be one more booksale before year-end.  This will likely take place during early November.

Facilities report: The new linoleum project has been delayed until late in July.  There was a discussion on the condition of the bank behind the Library.  It was agreed that the grass needs a trimming.  Bob Parks will pursue some means to keep the bank “under control”.

Old Business: The Salmon Bake was the key topic of discussion.  It was concluded that when we have a number of groups included in the activities, we need a detailed layout plan to specifically locate all fixed items.  This should included ample handicapped parking.  We also need to develop a strategy to minimize time spent waiting in line.  Other suggestions included; This year we cooked 500 lbs of fish versus last year’s 700 (but last year we had 200 lbs left), the BBQ can only cook 100 lbs of fish per hour, the set-up and tear-down were “organized chaos”, we had lots of volunteers, the 3yd dumpster was a great addition, and the t-shirts were missed (last year we had 36 printed and have one left-12 were given to cooks).

We all shared in a round of applause thanking Helen for the conclusion of her 24 years of chairing the Salmon Bake.  John agreed to send thank you notes to all the volunteers who don’t normally attend our meetings.  John will also attempt to insert a no cost thank you in the Sun to the businesses (Albertsons, HiJoy Bowl, & Manchester Family Inn) which contributed to the Salmon Bake.  Julie will send a thank you for the donation received.  John will send a thank you for the donated garden gift basket.

Julie is still looking for ideas for improving the Library entry-way.

The rotting logs which formed a barrier on the south side of the garden have been removed.  John & Joe investigated normal guardrails, which appear to be cost prohibitive.  Port Chair Jim Thompson has expressed willingness to provide some funding to support the cost of a new barrier.  It was mentioned that Morrison Gravel may have some appropriate rocks, but Joe will need to investigate further, and take no action until approved by both the Friends and Port.  We all agreed that we don’t want the barrier to become an attractive nuisance, and adding some vegetation around rocks might be a good solution.  We might even want to consider adding some rocks to the entry-way to improve the appearance.

New Business:  There was no new business.

Next meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday July 27th at 7:00 PM in the Library meeting room.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:58PM.

Respectfully submitted,

John Winslow, Secretary
