WEEKLY TUESDAY COFFEE & DISCUSSION 6:45AM, MANCHESTER FAMILY INN
Attending this mornings
meeting were Ron and Joyce Rada, Ray Pardo, Paul Gilligan, Joe and Mary Ann Blazevich,
Kerri Desjardin, Bob Edwards, Richard Dillworth,
Peggy Warren, Bud and Wanda Larsen. Joe Guariz
was excused with a bad cold, he has just returned from vacation.
Peggy reported that informal
meetings were held each week while Larsen's were on
vacation. Not necessarily safety oriented, but a good
opportunity to exchange ideas and keep up on what's going on in Manchester.
Kitsap County Public Works
will install traffic tubes at the entrance to Pomeroy
Park for the June 1st User Survey
being conducted by Manchester volunteers for the
Port of Manchester Commissioners. The
traffic counters will be installed on May 30th and removed on June 2nd.
We are still looking for a few more volunteers to help with this first User
Survey. The early hours are pretty well filled.
The boat launch needs volunteers for 9:00AM to 11:00AM and perhaps after
3:00PM. The launch survey will start at 4:00AM with Joe Guariz and Bud Larsen, followed by Joyce Rada at 9:00AM and then at 1:00PM Ray Pardo
will come on until 3:00PM. Pomeroy Park
survey will start at 10:00Am with Wanda Larsen to Noon, followed by Kerri
Desjardin for the Noon to 2:00PM shift. We need volunteers for 2:00PM to
4:00PM and possibly 4:00PM to 6:00PM. If you can help
please call Wanda at 769-8793 or email bwlarsen@wavecable.com to sign up.
Volunteers are also needed
for the June 15 Friends of The Manchester Library 40th Annual Father's Day
Salmon Bake being held in the library parking lot. This is always a
terrific event with good food, entertainment, drawings, camaraderie, home made
cookie sale, book sale, plus a plant sale this year. If you can help please call John or Joan Winslow at 360-871-7115,
or 206-524-0176, or email johnwinslow@aol.com .
Of interest was an article
published 5-17-08 by The Port Orchard Independent and entitled "Beach
Bacteria Concerns? State wants to know." The state
is monitoring 53 saltwater beaches in 2008. One of those sites is
the Manchester Stormwater outfall located in Pomeroy Park on the beach. For all the
information you can contact the Washington State BEACH Program - Links at http://www.ecy.gov/programs.eap/beach/2008beachlist.html
. We urge you to check it out and get involved, find out what is
presently being done and what can be done. Fill out the Survey of
recreation sites 2 page questionnaire to help
get funding for our beach clean up.
There was also a Level III
sex offender article released in South Kitsap
this past week. We have invited the Sheriff's Community Resources
Officer, Deputy Pete Ball, to visit one of our meetings in the near future to
bring us up to date on our blockwatch efforts and
information regarding our personal safety. For more information on
registered sex offenders in the county, contact Det.
Doug Dillard at 337-5617.
Ray Pardo
reported on a recent septic systems meeting he attended. Ray has been
recently appointed to a Kitsap County Transportation Planning committee and
been very active in pursuing answers to questions regarding transportation
issues, as well as septic cleanup. It was announced that Group
Health is not accepting outdated and or unused prescription with a warning to
everyone, do NOT flush prescription down the toilet. These chemicals can go
directly in to the water table in septic system areas.
Brochures are available from Public Health He is doing a great job
for all the citizens in Manchester,
and it is appreciated. Ray also reported on a letter forwarded to
Kitsap County Dept. of Public Works director Randy Casteel that was issued by
the MCC. The letter requests inclusion on the county TIP
list for Manchester Roads & Walkway Proposals. It includes
extensive listings and maps, photo's, etc. that bring
attention to safety problems in Manchester that
entail work on Beach Drive, Alaska Way, California
and Chester
intersection, etc. The work required is relatively modest and
the benefits in safety and road capacity is
substantial.
Both Ray Pardo
and Bob Edwards discussed recent "slip" earthquakes in Kitsap County.
It is vital that we do not become complacent when we have these weeks or months
long minor quakes, that one day there WILL be a big
one. We need to be prepared and ready for whatever we
can do, whenever it occurs.
An email from Port
Commissioner Steve Pederson was read, that updated the last Port of Manchester
meeting when none of our group was able to attend. He reported on recent
landscaping in the park and launch area that has been a job well
done. Alan Fletcher of the Manchester Water District is looking in
to the on-going serious restroom problems at the Port facility,
it could be an equipment failure. On June 3, our three commissioners,
Alan Fletcher and our recently contracted grant writer will appear in Olympia to hopefully have
our grant proposals critiqued and reviewed. HDR/Fish Pro
has been contracted to do an update on the Port's Master Plan,
that is needed to support this round of Grants as well as other Grants
that the Port may pursue in the future. The water district will
also be doing editing and layout support for the Port Commissioners. The
Port Advisory Committee is in the formation process and there has been an
excellent response of interest. The Cedar Heights Dance Team
will do the 4th of July cleanup at the Port this year. Lots of positive activity at the Port, as well as plans for the
future.
Kerri reported on a
discarded vehicle motor that has been in a creek off Puget Drive for some time, it is leaking
oil in to the stream. We will be contacting Steve Mount of Public
Works to look in to it as soon as possible.
Our guest next week will be
Kitsap County Fire Department Deputy Chief, Dan Olson who will be discussing
the proposed merger of several fire districts in the County. Dan is
always a great addition to a meeting with lots of fire safety information, we hope you can join us.
