Did
you know….Manchester
was
originally called
“Brooklyn”?
In 1892, citizens renamed their town with the hope their Washington
Manchester would become an active seaport, comparable to Manchester,
England.
- Did you know…..Manchester
was a destination along the
Mosquito Fleet
route? Water remained
the most efficient method of transportation around the Peninsula
through the late 19th and early 20th century.
One of the most famous ferry services was called the Mosquito
Fleet. Like the name implies, this
fleet of
small steam
vessels
traveled the Puget Sound waterways, including Manchester, Harper and
Southworth providing links between Peninsula communities and the
Seattle-Tacoma corridor.
- Did you know…
Salmonberry Road was the first land route, starting at Bethel and
built towards Colby? The original road to Colby from Manchester
wound it’s way along
Spring Street,
across a ravine by bridge and followed what is now
Puget Drive
and more or less along
Yukon
Harbor
Road?
- Did you know….lots
in “Manchester Heights” sold for
$25 in 1908?
Most of the streets were named after states. Buyers were encouraged
to buy lots bearing the name of their home states.
